Did I get your attention with my headline about sex tapes and celebrities? Or did you glance over at it, stifle a bored yawn and resolve to scroll through to something more interesting? It's pretty bad when the words "sex tapes" and "celebrities" don't even evoke any measurable emotions anymore. Look how far we've come -- and not in a good way!
Pamela Anderson And Tommy Lee
Anyone remember the Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee sex tape? Now there was an item guaranteed to get your motor rumbling up a notch or two above the norm. Why is that? While not the first one by any stretch of the imagination, Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee sex tape that did hit the internet definitely arrived before every famous Tom, Dick and Harry decided to make one and then have it "accidentally" leaked to the media. So that's probably some of its appeal right there. In spite of that, both the careers of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee have pretty much ground to a halt since the tape was stolen from their home in 1995.
Dustin Diamon "Screech"
Our tastes when it comes to sex tapes are apparently pretty fickle. The American public doesn't seem to think too highly of those people who decide that they want to make steamy -- or is that creepy? -- sex tape in order to bolster a flagging career. Dustin Diamond -- who played "Screech" on the television series, "Saved by the Bell," falls into the latter category. Though he has a porn worthy enough name, Dustin Diamond just couldn't manage to lift himself up out of the slippery slope he made for himself. He both directed and released his version of a sex tape, to resoundingly less than positive reviews. He later tried to backpedal and say that it wasn't even himself there on the screen, but a screen double! Really, dude? Do you really think we are so ignorant to buy that load of cock and bull that you tried to feed us?
On the other hand, you have those celebs whose careers we've elevated into stardom because of their sex tapes. Kim Kardashian's sex tape with Ray J is a prime example. Though filmed in 2003, their sex tape wasn't leaked until four years later. Kim began to rake in the money from its exposure almost immediately after she filed -- and won -- a lawsuit for $5 million. During her show, "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," Kim cried about how horrible the experience was for her, even as it propelled her to become a household name. The Hollywood Reporter also notes that the family made an additional $65 million in 2010 off the leak. Americans, as a whole, continue to eat up whatever the Kardashians dish out like its dripping in sugary sweet syrup.
