Better Than Sex? I don't Think So.

How many times have you heard this before: "You've got to try this tiramisu, it's better than sex. " When I hear that, my first thought is "Well, remind me not to have sex with you, then."

better than sexHow many times have you heard this before: "You've got to try this tiramisu, it's better than sex. " When I hear that, my first thought is "Well, remind me not to have sex with you, then. " Really, if you're thinking that a food item (or anything else for that matter) is better than sex, you must be doing it wrong. Sex not only feels good, it also comes with health benefits, emotional benefits and it is a biological process that influences almost everything that we do. Take that, red velvet cupcakes!

Having Sex Is Beneficial To Good Health In Many Ways

As a physical activity, sex is pretty good exercise. In fact, WebMD reports that sex burns five calories per minute and elevates the heart rate. WebMD lists quite a few other health benefits of sex, as well, ranging from improved sleep to lower blood pressure to a lower risk of prostate cancer in men and better bladder control in women. Of course there's the stress relief factor, as well, not to mention the emotional connection. Its why a lot of adult singles go to Sin City. The Las Vegas escorts and strippers know how to get you going and in the right environment. I know what you're thinking-- "How much emotional connection can there be with a semi-drunken hookup in the club at 3 AM? " There's probably more than you realize. Even when you choose to take home the girl who looks like a failed science experiment, it's likely because she reminds you in some weird way of the girl you had a crush on in the third grade, and there will be a fleeting moment of emotional connection, even if the end result of the encounter is that you both wake up screaming and praying that you remembered to use condoms.

Sex is arguably our most important biological process. The drive to procreate influences everything we do, from the clothes we where to the car we drive to the career we choose. Sex can make an otherwise reasonable, intelligent, self-assured woman stare at herself in the mirror for 20 minutes, trying to determine if her right eyebrow is fractionally longer than her left. It can make a man go to movies starring the likes of Barbara Streissand and J-Lo. When you break it down, there is very little that we do in the course of our day that is not aimed toward getting us more sex, better sex or freakier sex. Seriously, when you go to the gym, are you really thinking about your heart health, or are you thinking about impressing the hottie on the eliptical machine?

The Only Thing Better Than Sex Is Better Sex

Still, people insist on making ridiculous statements about desserts, dinners or beverages being better than sex (Although I will cut some slack to people who say coffee is better than sex, at least prior to 8 AM. They're still wrong, but it's an honest mistake.) It's not just food that people feel compelled to compare with sex, either. An article in the Huffington Post lists the idiotic statements of several misguided souls who mention things like putting on sneakers and hot showers being better than sex (Those are presumably done separately, but I'm pretty sure that even putting on your sneakers in the shower would not be better than sex).

So why do we say things like this? That's easy--denial. Unless you're an NBA player or a supermodel, chances are you can't have sex whenever and wherever you want, but on some level, we always want it. In fact, if all things were equal, you'd probably rather be having sex than reading this article right now (I'd certainly rather be having sex than writing it). So rather than sit here and think about how much we wish we could be having sex right now, we try to convince ourselves that this episode of "Let's Make a Deal " is really better than sex anyway, so we're not really the wistful, pathetic losers we seem to be. As an added bonus, there's always that hope that you're going to say something is better than sex and whomever you're talking to is going to say "Oh yeah? Then you haven't had good sex yet. Let's go. Right here, right now. " If that happens to you now, I won't be offended if you stop reading.
