Dear Veronika, Why are people so fascinated by trannys? Chris
Chris raises an interesting question about a term that is becoming more and more well known all the time. It might help to flesh out exactly what a tranny is -- though it, like many other terms, can often have several different connotations. Many people think that a tranny is a man who likes to dress up in women's clothing.
Depends On The Individual
This is a narrow definition that severely limits what being transgendered really means. For those people who identify as such though it means much more. Depending on the individual, it could mean that a person has started the process of acquiring the genital features of the opposite sex or it could mean that they identify themselves as being of the opposite sex only in their own thoughts. In other words, those people in the last category are still "in the closet" so to speak.
From celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner who bring the issue into the national and international limelight to those everyday people who simply live their lives in the best way they know how, transsexual people are all around us. Chances are you wouldn't even know if a person was a transsexual or if they displayed any transsexual behaviors unless they wanted to tell you. Of course, you will also have those people who are out and proud of their sexuality -- as they should be, in my opinion so that gives you the opportunity to learn more about their behavior and how they are both the same and different than you.
An Alternative Way Of Living
I guess what most people find so fascinating about people who identify as being transgender is that we -- as in a general "we" -- have such ingrained expectations of how you -- again in the general sense of the word -- are supposed to act, dress, carry yourself, etc. depending on your gender. When we see or hear something that calls these expectations into questions, then we don't know quite what to make of the whole situation. So we are fascinated by the contrasts between the two. It's my hope that one day we won't bat an eye when it comes to these types of behaviors. We are already working our way toward this goal -- slowly but surely. Regardless of what you think about Caitlyn Jenner, she is bringing attention to an alternative way of living and it can only help those who struggle with being accepted for their sexuality to feel more comfortable about being open with it.
